When it comes down to it, if you intend to play a lot of singleplayer, I would suggest United. It's not as farfetched as the United environments, but that's not to say they aren't fun. The way the cars handle here (I've played Stadium and Canyon, haven't played Valley yet), are more reasonable. Online play is alive and well, with a good amount of servers to choose from and play on.

While that may sound bad at first, these three environments have a full set of tracks to play on, as well as many technical and graphical improvements to the track creator, replay editor, and car painter. TM2 Stadium, Valley, and Canyon can be thought of as singular environments in this case.

You do have to learn how to play in each environment separately, as some are very nuanced, (I say this from memory, I haven't played United in a year or two). The gameplay here is quite varied, with several of the environments playing radically different from each other - Snow has breakneck turns and cars with great grip, Island tracks have impossible speed, etc. However, online play is very quiet from what I can tell, as many have moved onto The Trackmania 2 titles. You get the United tracks, which have race, puzzle, stunt, and platform tracks for 7 different environments, the Nations tracks, which if I remember correctly is the full set of tracks from the TM Nations release, and you also get the Star tracks, which is another set of races for the 7 environments. TM United has the most variety for what you pay for. I'm going to refer to the TM2 games collectively for the purpose of comparison, because they all came out roughly around the same time. IMO, this will be one of the major deciding factors. The biggest thing I can think of, when deciding on which trackmania to purchase, is if you intend to play online or not.
